  • Rule: 3rd person pronouns in a reported clause are NOT CHANGED. Direct Speech: Raven announced to the group, “They win the tournament.”
  • Rule: Occasionally, we do not need to change the present tense into the past if the information in the direct speech is still true or considered as a general fact. Direct Speech: Arnold answered, “Earth is the 3rd planet from the Sun.”
  • Rule: If the reporting clause is in the present tense or future tense, then there is NO CHANGE REQUIRED in the verb of the reported clause. Direct Speech: They will say, “Chivalry is long gone.”
  • Rule: If the reported verb in the direct speech is in the simple present, its simple past form will be used when converted into indirect speech. Direct Speech: The choreographer said, “The rude guy interrupts the dance from time to time.”
  • Rule: If the reported verb in the direct speech is in the present progressive, its past progressive form will be used when converted into indirect speech. Direct Speech: Michael humbly said, “We are donating the goods to the survivors of the typhoon.”
  • Rule: If the reported verb in the direct speech is in the present perfect, its past perfect form will be used when converted into indirect speech. Direct Speech: She said, “I have deleted the files.”
  • Rule: If the reported verb in the direct speech is in the simple past, its past perfect form will be used when converted into indirect speech. Direct Speech: Wilferd announced, “The celebration ended with a bang.”
  • Rule: If the reported verb in the direct speech is in the past progressive, its past perfect progressive form will be used when converted into indirect speech. Direct Speech: Allanie said, “The hyenas were laughing weirdly.”
